HOW TO VOTE
How do I vote at the Polls?
  1. First, you must go to the polling place that is shown on the back cover of your sample ballot pamphlet.

  2. Once at the polling place, you will announce your name and address to the Election Officer who will check to see if your name is on the listing. When your name and address are located, they will ask you to sign next to your name in the roster. Sign it.

If your name is not on the list, you may be at the wrong polling place. Check the polling place address on the back cover of your sample ballot. If you are sure that you are registered and at the correct address, ask the Elections Officer to call the Elections Office to verify your registration and polling place.

  3. After signing in, ask the Elections Officer to show you how to use the voting machine. The Election Officer will give you a voter access card to which holds your ballot type. Insert it into the touch screen unit and follow the directions on the screen. To practice go to www.co.kern.ca.us/Elections and click on "Start Touch Screen Demo." You do not have to vote on every candidate or issue to have your ballot counted.

To vote for a qualified write-in candidate, you must fill in their name in the blank box provided at the bottom of the appropriate office. The Elections Officer will have a list of qualified write-in candidates for your reference.

You may take your sample ballot and any other information that will help you make a decision while voting into the voting booth. If you feel that you need assistance, a person of your choice may be with you while you vote.

  4. Printed Ballots Only: If you make a mistake on a printed ballot, return it to the Elections Officer. The officer will put it into a special envelope marked spoiled and will give you another ballot to vote. Please take extra time and complete it very carefully. There is a limit of 2 spoiled ballots.

  5. Printed Ballots Only: When you finish voting, place the printed ballot into the secrecy envelope, the stub shall be retained by the voter. Hand the Election Officer your ballot inside the secrecy envelope. Observe the Election Officer putting your ballot into the ballot box.
