What is Vote by Mail?

Any registered voter can vote by mail. It's easy, safe and convenient. You will receive your ballot in the mail. After voting, return it in the envelope provided. You have two options to vote by mail:

  • Vote by Mail one time for a single election.
  • Become a Permanent Vote by Mail Voter and receive your ballot by mail for every election.

How does Vote by Mail work?

Vote by Mail Applications are available starting 29 days before an election.

We stop processing Vote by Mail Applications 7 days before an election. After the 7-day deadline you must come into our office to request a Vote by Mail Ballot.

Permanent Vote by Mail Voters will automatically receive their ballots in the mail for each election.

When you receive your ballot, you will mark your choices by filling in the Vote by Mail Ballot. You can return your completed Vote by Mail Ballot using one of the options below:

  • Mail your ballot to the Kern County Elections Office:

Ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received within 3 days following an election.


  • Return your ballot to our office anytime Monday-Friday regular business hours or until 8:00 PM on Election Day; or to any polling site by the close of polls on Election Day.

Applications are available in convenient forms:

  • Apply by phone at (661) 868-3590.
  • Fill in the application included with your voter pamphlet. You will receive a voter pamphlet before each election.
