Q: What hours are Poll Sites open for Voting?

A: All Poll Sites are open from 7 AM to 8 PM on Election Day.

Q: What if my name cannot be found on the Official List of Voters when I go to vote at a Poll Site?

A: If we can’t find your name in the Roster, you will either be sent to the correct polling place if you are at the wrong site, or you will vote provisionally.

Q: What if I need help marking my Official Ballot?

A: You can have up to two people of your choice help you; however, you cannot be assisted by your employer; union representative or an agent of your employer or union representative.

Q: How can the Personal Information on Registration be used?

A: Information on your voter registration affidavit will be used by election officials to send you official information on the voting process, including the location of your polling place and the issues and candidates that will appear on the ballot. Commercial use of voter registration information is prohibited by law and is a misdemeanor.

Voter information may be provided to a candidate for office; a ballot measure committee; or other persons for election, scholarly, journalistic, political, or government purposes, as determined by the State. Driver’s license and social security numbers, or your signature as shown on your voter registration card, cannot be released for these purposes.

Q: When do I update my Registration and how do I do it?

A: You have to update your registration if:

  • You change your name (marriage; divorce; adoption, etc.).
  • Change your address.
  • Change your political party.

Q: If I just moved to Kern County, how long do I wait to Register?

A: There is no waiting time. As soon as you become a Kern County resident you can register to vote. You are eligible to vote in any election after 15 days from the date you registered. Click on the link below.

Q: Can I Register to vote if I am not 18 years old?

A: If you are under 18 you can Pre-register. In order to pre-register you must be 16 or 17 years old and meet all other registration requirements. You will automatically be registered to vote on your 18th birthday when you pre-register. For more information on Pre-Registration, click on the link below.

Q: Is it necessary to belong to a Political Party?

A: If you do not want to belong to any political party, mark “no party preference”. If you want to belong to a party that is not on the list, mark ‘Other’ and print the name of the qualified political party of your choice on the blank line.

Q: Is “Independent” or No Party Preference the same as American Independent?

A: No, American Independent is an actual political party. If you do not want to be associated with a political party you need to mark ‘No, I do not wish to disclose a Political Party Preference’. For more information, click on the link below.

Q: Why wasn’t I allowed to choose which Political Party I wanted to vote for in the Primary if I am not associated with any Political Party?

A: A No Party Preference (NPP) ballot contains only the names of candidates for voter-nominated offices and local nonpartisan offices and measures. For a presidential election, NPP voters will receive a “non-partisan” ballot that does not include presidential candidates. You can request a ballot for ONE of the parties who allow NPP voters to request their party’s presidential ballot. For more information, click on the link below.

Q: Why did you give my Contact Information to Candidates and Political Groups?

A: BY law we are required to give voter information to candidates, ballot measure committees, other persons for election, scholarly, journalistic, political, or governmental purpose. Items that remain confidential and are never provided to anyone are your social security number, your driver’s license number, and your signature.

Q: Why did I get two (or more) Jury Summons?

A: Jury services gets your information for jury duty from the voter roll and from the DMV. If you have more than one voter registration with different information you WILL get multiple jury summons. If your voter registration is different than your DMV information you WILL get multiple jury summons. If you moved out of the county and have not updated your voter registration you will continue to get jury summons from Kern County.
